Time Is Running Out: Can We Get To Mars Before It’s Too Late? Every Monday, Elon Musk and his team at SpaceX brainstorm about “Mars colonial transport architecture.” And that’s just another day at the office for them. Right from the start, SpaceX was founded with the goal of colonizing Mars. Musk has made it clear that he believes this is imperative for our world for two reasons. The first is simply that humankind needs an inspiring adventure like this one. The other, and more daunting, is that Musk believes that our survival in contingent on it.

If a catastrophe were to take place, self-made or otherwise and destroyed life on Earth—our only chance of survival would be in a human colony established elsewhere. To Musk, this isn’t science fiction. It’s merely common sense.

“You back up your hard drive…Maybe we should back up life, too?” Musk said in an interview with GQ.

SpaceX hopes to develop reusable rocket technology that can be used to ferry large numbers of people, and large amounts of cargo, to Mars. In order to reach this goal, SpaceX needs major funding—and it also needs a plan. They will have to determine what it will actually take to get to and from Mars, hence “Mars colonial transport architecture.”

So what, exactly, does Musk have up his sleeve for Mars-colonization? At the moment, that’s an intentional mystery.

“Before we announce it, I want to make sure that we’re not gonna make really big changes to it,” Musk says. “Um, yeah. I think it’s gonna seem pretty crazy, no matter what.”

But rest assured—the plans are almost certain to be big.

“It’s really big,” Musk told GQ. “There’s not been any architecture like this described that I’m aware of.”
